REPRODUCTION
If you are planning to breed one or a one hundred mares, Keenan McAlister Equine has years of experience with equine reproduction. We have worked on some of the largest breeding farms in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states, involving Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. With our experience with cooled semen, frozen semen and natural cover, we can address your questions and guide you through the process. Over past years, mares bred through Keenan McAlister Equine have enjoyed conception rates of greater than 90%.
The first step in breeding is to determine the reproductive status of your mare. There are two main components to this: first, your mare’s reproductive health will be analyzed to determine her ability to conceive and carry a foal to term; second, where your mare is in her reproductive cycle will be determined and a plan for breeding will be discussed. Contrary to popular belief, breeding a mare frequently during her cycle does not increase conception rates; in fact it may even compromise her ability to conceive. The highest conception rates occur when the mare is bred once or possibly twice, but at the proper time. Our veterinarians will determine the best time to breed your mare, guide you through the ordering of the semen (or natural cover process) and then breed the mare when it arrives. In most cases pregnancy determination can be done by ultrasound examination at 14-17 days post breeding.
Once your mare is pregnant, our office will keep track and remind you of all her medical needs including pregnancy monitoring, vaccinating against viral abortion and other diseases at the appropriate times, and making sure you and she are ready for foaling. After foaling, our years of experience and training to help insure that your mare and foal are healthy, well nourished and progressing properly.
